Dig Power (JP: 発掘力) is a core mechanic in the Badman series, introduced in What Did I Do to Deserve This, My Lord!?, though its use varies across titles. It was superceded by Horde Power in No Heroes Allowed! VR.

In the core series, Dig Power is a mechanic that dictates how many blocks of soil the God of Destruction can break in a given stage. This is restored based on how much Dig Power is left after a stage is beaten, wherein the player can choose to upgrade monsters or conserve it to dig a larger dungeon. Careful management of Dig Power allows for quick monster upgrades, allowing Badman's army to quickly dispatch invading heroes.

Upgrading monsters

Dig Power can be spent on upgrades between stages to advance a monster to the next stage in its family. For example, a Slimemoss can be upgraded into an American Slimemoss for 100 Dig Power. This also applies for Giant Breeds, Abnormal Breeds, and Rare Breeds, being the only way to advance them down their breed's evolutionary line.

Only monsters the God of Destruction themselves can create can be upgraded. Any monster spawned "naturally" doesn't apply; for example, if an American Slimemoss spawns from a Treasure Chest or fossil, it doesn't suddenly mean you can upgrade your Slimemoss into a Hyacin Slimemoss.

What Did I Do to Deserve This, My Lord!?

What Did I Do to Deserve This, My Lord!? had players invest Dig Power in multiples of 100, meaning players could stagger their investments across stages. For example, 100 could be spent on Stage 1, and then the rest could be paid on Stage 2. This technically makes upgrading easier, allowing for partial investments in multiple monsters for slightly more complex playthroughs.

The following table will list monsters according to the multiples of 100 Dig Power required for an upgrade. Not all monsters have a fourth form, such as the Omnom; this would become a staple in What Did I Do to Deserve This, My Lord!? 2.

Monster family Level 2 Level 3 Level 4

Insect family 2 5 N/A

What Did I Do to Deserve This, My Lord!? 2

What Did I Do to Deserve This, My Lord!? 2 did away with the partial investment system of upgrading monsters, instead having players pay in lump sums. Level 4 breeds became a staple outside of Dragons, allowing Omnoms, Spirits, and Liliths to reach their full potential. However, their upgrade requirements also increased in general, requiring higher investment.

No Heroes Allowed!

No Heroes Allowed! introduced 50s into some upgrade figures and increased upgrade costs for various monsters, particularly Omnoms, Lizardmen, and more. Liliths had their upgrade costs reduced.

No Heroes Allowed! VR categorises its upgrades under Upgrade Points, but this serves the same purpose as Dig Power. It also allows Level 5 Breeds to be obtained via upgrades for the first time in the franchise.
